KL-based firm wants to develop a monorail system for Melaka
Good news for the people of Melaka!
AYER KEROH, July 22 – The people of Melaka may get to experience a ‘real’ monorail system by 2026 as a Klang Valley company has shown interest to construct such project for the state.
It is learnt that the company representatives will meet the state government on Wednesday to present their proposal.
The proposed monorail system will be a far cry from the current recreational Melaka Monorail service that connects Taman Rempah to the Hang Tuah Station on Jalan Bunga Raya.
“Should the state government give its consent, constructions for the private finance initiative (PFI) project may start after two to three years,” a source told MelakaKini.
“Another two years is needed for the project to be completed,” the source added.
According to the source, the monorail system will connect Gerbang Ayer Keroh here to Dataran Pahlawan in Banda Hilir.
It is believed that the project will go through the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh Heights, Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB), Melaka Sentral and Jalan Hang Tuah areas.
A total of 16 stations are expected to be built for the project.
For the record, the proposal to build a monorail system from Ayer Keroh to the city centre has been in the pipeline for years but has yet to be materialised.
It was meant to reduce traffic congestion especially during weekends and public holidays when the number of visitors to the state via the Ayer Keroh Toll Plaza increased significantly.
